Andrea,
I can't see an obvious problem with your code.
It is probably necessary to step through it with a debugger to make sure that a valid object is being viewed/returned.

Actually if you check the output in the gist comments, the serialdense matrix is on proc 0 and I can print it correctly to cout.
I can also print elements 0,0 and 0,1 but when I try printing 1,1 or any other of the second column, it fails with segfault.
