Thanks for the advice!

A colleague explained how to recompile HDF5 without the v1.6 API:

If the user is using an existing  HDF5-1.8.x library that has not been
configured with "--with-default-api-version=v16", but his/her application
still uses the 1.6.x version of the API, they can still use their existing
HDF5-1.8.x library by building their application code with the
"-DH5_USE_16_API" option that is passed to their Makefile/Build script.


This implies that Trilinos could undefine -DH5_USE_16_API temporarily in
that source file.  I'm guessing also that Trilinos could use either API,
depending on what's available, but I'm not sure.
