Hi Kevin,
I got some feedback on the 'whirl' error message. I'm not sure if this will help you, but another consultant has said anytime he sees the 'whirl' error messages lately it is because of the memory limits on the login nodes. Trilinos probably does use more than most. You can get around this by compiling in batch.
qsub -I -V -q interactive
when you get a prompt do the compile.
The interactive queue will give you 30 minutes. If you need more time I think you can submit to 'batch' as well, but you'll probably have to wait for the window longer.
